PNP reports 8.24% decrease in index crimes

THE PNP yesterday reported an 8.24 percent decrease in index crimes, or crimes against persons and property, from January to October this year compared to the same period last year.

In a statement, the PNP said there were 2,877 fewer index crimes reported during the first 10 months of the year, from 34,908 last year to 32,031 this year.

The PNP said the information came from a “comprehensive report” from the PNP Crime Information Reporting and Analysis System. The information, it said, was based on data from 17 police regional offices nationwide.

“The report paints an impressive picture of the efforts made by the PNP, showcasing an 8.24 percent decrease in index crime volume with 2,877 fewer incidents compared to the same period last year,” it said.

The PNP said there were 2,838 fewer incidents (8.18 percent decrease) on “focus crimes” such as murder, robbery, theft, rape, physical injury and carnapping during the same period.

“These promising outcomes stand as a clear testament to the tireless and coordinated efforts of the Philippine National Police,” said PNP chief Brig. Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr.

“Contrary to popular narratives, the statistics undeniably demonstrate a noteworthy decline in the overall crime rate during the 10 months of 2023,” added Acorda.

Acorda said the success reflects the PNP’s commitment to serve the people and its “unwavering vow to decisively suppress criminal activities, ensuring the safety and security of our communities.”

In the campaign against illegal drugs, the PNP said it has seized P9.73 billion worth of illegal drugs and arrested 37,801 suspects in 37,801 operations conducted from January to October this year.

The PNP said it has conducted 482,963 anti-carnapping operations that led to the recovery of 973 stolen vehicles and the arrest of 972 suspects.

It also reported the arrest of 63,486 suspects in the campaign against wanted persons, adding 341 others surrendered.

In the campaign against loose firearms, the PNP said 7,914 suspects were arrested and 25,174 firearms were recovered, surrendered, and confiscated.

On anti-cybercrime operations, the PNP said 732 suspects were arrested and 4,096 victims were rescued.
